TOBY CAUGHRON

Toby Caughron was born and raised in Southern California. Growing up in the Los Angeles area, he was exposed to diverse cultures at a young age. He developed an interest in drawing and videography early on, but it wasn’t until the age of 18 that he discovered his passion for photography. During a semester abroad in Salamanca, Spain, he took the opportunity to photograph some of the most well known landmarks in Europe. Now based in Los Angeles, Toby works as a freelance commercial and editorial photographer.

What did you dream of being when you were a kid?
An astronaut…I wanted to go to the moon!

What are you doing now in your life?
I currently have a book/gallery show project in the works from a charity trip to Ghana, Africa with UCEFA.org. The book is expected to release in early summer and all proceeds will be donated to help bring clean drinking water to the rural villages of Ghana. On the commercial side, I have some upcoming magazine collaborations, look book shoots, and looking forward to some travel adventures this summer. I am also making my way into film/directing so be on the look out.

What has been the best advice given to you to about surviving in the entertainment industry?
Success isn't a destination; it's a journey. Patience is virtue.

Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?
My fashion inspiration is a merge of different Southern California styles. I wear a lot of black but every now and then I'll mix it up with some bright/off the wall color scheme.

Describe your style to us?
Clean and simple.

Describe your outfit when you go out?
A typical outfit when I go out usually consists of a fresh tee or button-up, a clean pair of denim, and some Creative Recreation kicks. I’m not really big on jewelry but a nice Nixon 51-30 timepiece, metal frame sunglasses and some dog tags is usually the finishing touch.

What item of clothing would you like to see brought back?
Not necessarily an item of clothing…but rather a style. Nowadays it seems like casual is the way to go. What happened to the days when getting fresh meant putting on a clean suit and tie?

Who is a person that has been an inspiration to you?
As far as photography is concerned, you can check out my top 10 favorite (living) photographers at: www.tobycphoto.blogspot.com My parents, family and close friends have been the biggest inspiration to me. They believed in me when I was just a guy with a camera and a dream. I also want to thank Mr. Darrell Carr from Citrus College for helping me realize my ability and pushing me to follow photography as a career.

Who is the ultimate Spader to you?

Barrack Obama. He has an undeniable swag and you can't help but admire the man for what he has achieved.

OMAR MUSA'S DEBUT VIDEO

“It has been a labour of love- but it had to be”, says Sydney director/animator Tom Spiers of his new video “Hemingway”, shot in London with local rapper and award winning poet Omar Musa. “Releasing my debut video is one of the highlights of my career so far,” says Musa. After winning the British Council’s Realise Your Dream competition, he relocated to the U.K. to work in its thriving music industry. During this time, he shot the video for debut single and Triple J played “Hemingway”, which is the culmination of months of painstaking work.

The Spader team would like to congratulate Omar on the "Hemingway" video, looking good Spader!

DOLLA (R.I.P)

DOLLA

(words from our good mate Jorge Peniche)

Last night I received a text message from my homie that read “R.I.P. Dolla”. I paused for a couple of seconds and read the line of text over and over in disbelief. I then preceded to text him back to see where he had heard this tragic news. I was hoping it was merely a sick rumor online. He directed me to the Los Angeles Times website, and on their front page I sadly found the headline that read, “Rapper Dolla is shot, killed at Beverly Center.” My jaw dropped, heart paused, and I became filled with sadness and anger.

I read the story and couldn’t believe that I was reading the account of his murder. I reflected at that very moment on the last time I saw Dolla only a few months ago. My homie Adam whose Dolla’s right-hand man invited me to a studio session at Record Plant in Hollywood, CA.

Prior to Dolla arriving I met with Adam, and he explained to me his excitement about Dolla’s new projects. Having just come off a promotional tour with him, he told me that the people were really receptive to his music and that the album set to be released soon was coming along well.

A few minutes later Dolla arrived, and we shot some photos outside the studio. He was really calm, and forward thinking which allowed me to shoot him in a different light then he had been shot before. Jokes were exchanged between Dolla and I allowing for some true candid shots. It was truly a privilege; he was focused.

After we finished shooting I asked him to record a freestyle for my site. Without any hesitation we walked across the street to a spot with more light, and the magic flowed from there.

A line from his freestyle that really caught my ear was the following:
“Looking to succeed in a good situation, get my niggas off the streets and give em’ corporate occupations.”

That line to me represents what Dolla stood for, and although my interaction with him was considerably brief I feel great sadness in hearing about his loss.

Dolla was 21, with immense potential and a whole life ahead of him that was unfortunately cut short. The world will never have the privilege of seeing the potential that lied within him.

Although as humans we are aware that death is a part of life, the fact that his life was taken from him at such a young age leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Murder is the ultimate sin, and these circumstances leave me highly confused.

Words can't describe how much he will be missed. My condolences go out to his family, friends, and fans in this time of mourning.

You will be missed homie!

- Jorge Peniche
